What is New
Look of School Milk?
It’s an innovative program to improve
the appeal of milk and increase milk consumption among students. The New Look of
School Milk includes serving milk:
u
Ice-cold
u In 8-ounce, kid-cool, easy-to-open plastic
bottles on the meal line
u In multiple flavors
u In attractive
refrigerated units throughout the school
The New Look of School Milk was tested in a 2002
study initiated through a partnership between National Dairy Council and the
American School Food Service Association. The year-long study involved 100,000
students and showed that more students selected milk and students drank more of
the milk they bought.
More Kids Drank More Milk
u
School milk sales increased 18%
u Milk consumption rose 37%
u
Secondary school meal participation increased 5%

Since 2002, over 6,000 schools nationwide
have adopted the New Look of School Milk and have experienced sustained
increases in milk sales similar to those in the initial pilot study.

83% of students said school milk in
plastic bottles was "better overall" compared to identical
school milk in paper cartons.(Source: June
2005 survey of more than 300 school-aged children conducted
by Peryam & Kroll Research Corp. on behalf of the National
Dairy Council.) |
Why give MILK a NEW LOOK?
It’s an easy step towards implementation of your school district’s Local
Wellness Policy. Improving the milk you offer students can be part of
the solution to create a healthier school environment.
Why give MILK a NEW
LOOK?
There is a teen calcium crisis. Just when kids reach a critical time in
their life for bone development, many stop drinking milk. Seventy-seven
percent of kids ages 9-19 do not meet their recommended dairy intake.
(Source: National Dairy
Council, unpublished date based on the National Health and Nutrition
Survey (NHANES), 1999-2002.)
Why give MILK a NEW LOOK?
Kids today are overweight yet undernourished. The decline in milk consumption
leads to serious health consequences putting our kids at risk for osteoporosis,
overweight and diabetes.
According to the 2005
Dietary Guidelines for Americans, dairy foods supply three of the five
nutrients children need more of in their diets; calcium, potassium and
magnesium. The 2005 Dietary Guidelines recommend that children ages 9
and older consume 3 daily servings of low-fat or fat-free milk and milk
products as part of a healthy diet.
|
Making the healthy option of milk more
appealing can help students get essential nutrients they
need for growth and development. |
Why give MILK a NEW LOOK?
School children were more than twice as
likely to say they would choose milk when it’s served in a plastic bottle
compared to milk in a paper carton. Students said that milk in plastic bottles:
u
was easier to open.
u
was easier to drink from.
u
had a better flavor.
u
was cool, trendy, stylish, new and fun to
drink!

Make milk students’ beverage of
choice! Give milk in your school a NEW LOOK. Offer ice-cold milk served
in flavors, in kid-friendly, plastic packaging on the meal line and
watch participation grow!
"The students in our district
prefer milk in plastic bottles. We increased our milk consumption by 400
milks per day with the majority at the high school level. I was really
pleasantly surprised. I knew milk consumption would go up, but I never
dreamed it would go up that much!"
u Terri Sincock,
Food Service Director,
Hartland Consolidated Schools
"Our school meal participation
increased 11 percent when we offered milk in 8-ounce plastic containers.
We started with the middle school and the students loved the new milk so
much that we now offer it in the elementary and high school, too. The
kids say it tastes better."
u
Diane Tomakowski,
School Food Service Director,
Whitmore Lake Public Schools
"The kids absolutely love the
milk in plastic containers. We offer 1% vanilla, strawberry and
chocolate in every school—they like all of the flavors. I’ve been a
school food service director for 32 years and didn’t think a different
container would matter—it’s the same milk. But I’ll have to eat my hat
because we’ve doubled the number a la carte milk we sell and the kids
are drinking more of what they buy."

School Food Service Director,
